The Trump administration is preparing to make the U.S. citizenship test more difficult, adding possible changes like a standardized format and an essay requirement. USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said the current exam is “too easy” and does not measure whether applicants truly understand or respect the U.S. Constitution.
Framing it as a “war on fraud,” Edlow also announced new enforcement tools for agents, supported by a rule expanding USCIS’s law enforcement role.
The move is part of broader immigration actions under President Donald Trump’s second term, including increased detention funding, expanded hiring at ICE and CBP, and tougher vetting of applicants’ personal and professional networks.
