36 thousand kilometers do not stop China.. Space Internet at lightning speed from a stationary satellite
China has announced a significant technical advancement in the field of satellite communications using laser technologies, after successfully testing high-speed data transmission with exceptional efficiency over long distances. At the beginning of this year, Interesting Engineering magazine revealed that researchers from Chang Guang Satellite Technology (CGST) managed to achieve a download speed of 100 gigabits per second via an optical link with a mobile ground receiving station.
In a subsequent step, a Chinese geostationary satellite successfully transmitted data at a speed of 1 gigabit per second over a distance of 36 thousand kilometers using a laser with a power not exceeding 2 watts, an achievement that highlights China's accelerated progress in developing next-generation space infrastructure, confirming its ability to compete with globally leading space communication networks, according to Daily Galaxy.
Advanced technologies to achieve high performance
The first test conducted in January 2025 demonstrated the technology's ability to operate in practical field environments, away from laboratories and fixed ground stations. The second experiment focused on improving efficiency rather than increasing power, utilizing adaptive optics technology that corrects atmospheric distortions, allowing low-power laser beams to transmit stable signals over massive distances.
