🚗#ElonMusk 's Tesla received orders for just over 600 cars in India since its launch: Report🗞️
🇮🇳 Tesla’s journey in India has had a slow start, with just 600+ car orders since launching, according to a recent report.
📦 Tesla plans to ship around 350–500 cars to India in 2025, with the first batch arriving from Shanghai in early September. Deliveries will initially be limited to:
🏙️ Mumbai
🏢 Delhi
🚘 Pune
🌆 Gurugram
📉 The company’s expectations were much higher. Globally, Tesla sells that many vehicles in just four hours.
💰 High import duties are a major roadblock. An entry-level Tesla costs around $68,000 (₹59+ lakh), putting it far beyond the average buyer’s reach.
🛑 Tesla had hoped to utilise its full 2,500-car import quota this year, but several issues held back momentum:
🇺🇸 US-India trade talks have stalled
🤝 Elon Musk’s ties with Donald Trump fell apart
📈 Tariffs on Indian goods rose
🚧 Local taxes remain high
⚡ Despite the challenges, India’s EV market is growing. Over 2,800 electric cars (mostly cheaper than Teslas) were sold in the first half of 2025.
📊 So, while 600 may seem low, it’s not entirely disappointing in a premium segment.
🔮 Musk remains hopeful that tariffs may reduce over time as future negotiations evolve — but for now, Tesla’s India debut remains cautious and calculated.
