Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin held a meeting today, Monday, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit taking place in the Chinese city of Tianjin.
🔹 Putin praised Turkey's role in mediation efforts to end the war in Ukraine, emphasizing that "Ankara's diplomatic role remains necessary".
🔹 The Turkish delegation included prominent ministers from foreign affairs, defense, energy, finance, and intelligence.
🔹 Turkey had previously hosted negotiation rounds between Moscow and Kyiv, which only resulted in agreements on prisoner exchanges and the return of soldiers' bodies.
In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is preparing to meet European leaders in Paris on Thursday to discuss security guarantees and the future of any potential settlement with Russia, amid his assurances that Moscow "invests more in war than in peace".
