Warning of Bitcoin Fraud by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has issued a public warning about a Bitcoin fraud scheme in which the perpetrators impersonate U.S. Customs agents. They target victims without criminal backgrounds using personal data—including social security numbers—to appear credible.
Victims are pressured to withdraw cash and deposit it through Bitcoin ATM machines, while they remain in contact with the perpetrators throughout the process with threats of surveillance and detention.
Captain Crystal Holmes emphasizes that law enforcement agencies will never demand payment through cryptocurrency or over the phone. Crypto transactions are difficult to reverse, so victims are urged to enhance their online security and report immediately if targeted.
