Japan breaks the world record for internet speed
Japan has just redefined what āultra-fast internetā means: researchers from the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), along with Sumitomo Electric Industries, managed to transmit data at a speed of 1.02 petabits per second over 1,808 kilometers of standard optical fiber.
š What does 1.02 petabits per second mean?
⢠It is equivalent to more than 1 million gigabits per second.
⢠Enough to download the entire Netflix catalog in one second.
⢠More than 4 million times the average speed in the U.S. and 16 million in India.
š§ How did they achieve this?
⢠They used conventional optical fiber, compatible with existing infrastructure.
⢠The fiber had 19 cores, allowing more data to be transmitted without increasing the thickness of the cable.
⢠They maintained the speed over a distance 28 times greater than previous records.
š Is this available yet?
Not yet. This technology is in the experimental phase, but it lays the groundwork for a new generation of faster, more efficient, and accessible internet.
