Another blow against Trump's totalitarian ambitions:
Donald Trump is considering cutting funding for the California university system, the largest higher education system in the country, with about 12% of all enrolled students in the U.S.
The measure is part of the new American government's "Crusade against Education," which included the abolition of the Federal Department of Education, cuts to education and social assistance funding, control of school content including the literal burning of books deemed "inappropriate," expulsion of alleged critics of Trump among students and teachers, prohibition of protests against the government and Israel on university campuses, persecution of foreign students, financial pressure, and slanderous claims against the largest institutions in the U.S. and their academics.
The list above is indeed quite long and strongly resembles the fiction "The Handmaid's Tale" and also parallels the reality of Germany in the 1930s...
But in response, Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on social media that California provides about US$ 80 BILLION MORE IN TAXES to the federal government than it receives in return.
In 2022, California residents and businesses provided US$ 692 billion in tax revenue to the federal government. In return, the state received US$ 609 billion in federal funding, leaving a deficit of about US$ 83 billion, which remained in the Federal Government's coffers.
Cutting funding for California universities also means increasing this deficit to over 160 billion.
In response to Newsom's post, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the governor "is threatening to commit criminal tax evasion."
The U.S. is a federation of independent states with autonomy. Federal intervention used to be rare, but it has been very common under the Trump administration in various areas, such as public safety, local economy, and social assistance. Always seeking to harm Democratic governors.
