MetaMask integrates login with Google and Apple
MetaMask, the popular self-custody cryptocurrency wallet, has just launched a social login feature, allowing users to create and recover wallets using their Google or Apple accounts. This move is expected to help new users access crypto more easily.
How it works and benefits
This new feature, supported by authentication provider #Web3Auth , eliminates the need for a secret recovery phrase. Instead of having to remember 12 words, users can use their Google or Apple accounts to access their wallets across multiple devices. MetaMask states that this is an effort to "reduce barriers" and provide a safer, simpler way to start the Web3 journey.
Trade-offs and risks
While offering convenience, this feature also comes with some trade-offs. Relying on third-party providers like Google and Apple raises concerns about privacy, security, and centralization. If users lose access to their social accounts, recovering their wallets could become challenging. However, #MetaMask still encourages users to keep their secret recovery phrase as a backup.
This feature is currently available on the browser extension and is expected to be updated soon on the mobile version.
