Russia stated that Putin has no plans to meet with Zelensky against the backdrop of Ukrainian strikes on nuclear and gas power plants in Moscow.
Russia has just quashed the idea of peaceful negotiations between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, despite US President Donald Trump's statement about the beginning of preparations for a meeting.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Sunday in the "Meet the Press" program on NBC that a meeting is not planned. "Putin is ready to meet with Zelensky when the summit agenda is ready," Lavrov said. He then added: "And this agenda is not ready at all."
Trump held a personal meeting with Putin in Alaska, and then hosted Zelensky in the White House in the presence of several European leaders.
But while Trump promoted the idea of diplomacy, Russia did not stop. Instead, missile strikes on Ukraine resumed, one of which targeted an electronics manufacturing plant linked to an American company.
This strike, which occurred just a few days after the meetings, raised further questions about whether Trump could actually influence the cessation of the war in any way. JD Vance, Trump's vice president, in his NBC interview, tried to maintain a serious expression, stating that they were still betting on "energetic diplomacy" to end the war.
"In the end, we will succeed, or we will hit a wall," Vance said. "And if we hit a wall, we will continue this process of negotiations, of applying pressure tactics."
By Sunday evening, when Russia publicly accused Ukraine of a drone attack on a nuclear power plant, this "pressure tactic" seemed completely devoid of prospects.
Ukraine attacked the reactor and oil pipeline of the Kursk NPP within one day.
On the 34th Independence Day of Ukraine, drones struck the Kursk NPP in western Russia, near the border with Ukraine. The output of the third reactor fell by 50 percent, and Russian officials stated that other energy infrastructure facilities were also damaged as a result of the night strikes.
According to a news dispatch from the NPP on Telegram, the fire was quickly extinguished, no one was injured, and radiation levels remained normal. Two other reactors continue to operate but are not generating energy, and one is closed for repairs.
The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that the radiation background near the incident site is stable, publishing on X: "Monitoring confirms normal radiation levels near the Kursk NPP."
Alexander Khinshtein, acting governor of the Kursk region, stated that the NPP is only 60 kilometers from the border and called the drone strikes a violation of "all international conventions." He termed the attack a threat to nuclear safety — a phrase that Moscow has repeatedly used when its energy facilities have come under fire.
But Ukraine did not stop there. Robert Brody, commander of the Ukrainian Drone Forces, confirmed that they also attacked the "Unecha" pumping station in Bryansk, which is part of the Druzhba pipeline.
This pipeline still delivers Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia — the only two EU countries that still receive fuel from Moscow. The governor of the Bryansk region, Alexander Bogomaz, stated that drones and Himars missiles were used in the attack.
The strike led to a complete halt in oil deliveries to Hungary and Slovakia. The foreign ministers of these countries, Peter Szijjarto and Juraj Blanar, informed the European Commission that the suspension could last five days or more.
In a letter, they wrote: "The physical and geographical reality is such that without this pipeline, the secure supply of our countries is simply impossible." Hungary receives more than half of its necessary oil through the Druzhba pipeline, and this is already the third instance in a short period where the system has been attacked.
On Facebook, Szijjarto called it "another attack on the energy security of our country. Another attempt to drag us into war."
While the EU continues to support Kyiv with weapons and aid, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban remains on the sidelines. He has not supported military, political, or economic packages for Ukraine.
Moreover, last year he flew to Moscow and held personal talks with Putin, becoming one of the few European leaders to do so since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Now that fuel supplies to Hungary and Slovakia are blocked, and a nuclear facility in Russia is on fire, the gap between Trump's version of progress and the real events on the ground continues to widen.
