Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the third richest person in Mexico, reportedly transferred a large part of his fortune into bitcoins. According to various data, now 80% of his fortune is stored in cryptocurrency.
Pliego, founder and chairman of Grupo Salinas, has been actively supporting bitcoins for several years. His latest investment significantly exceeds 70% in bitcoins, which he reported earlier. Pliego is known in Mexico for his projects in media, energy, and telecommunications.
Pliego began actively supporting bitcoins at least since 2020. At that time, he started increasing the share of bitcoins in his portfolio from 10% to 70%, describing bitcoins as a preferred alternative to traditional fiat currencies. He publicly called fiat currencies a 'fraud' and integrated bitcoin payments into his banking business Banco Azteca.
In a recent interview, Pliego stated: 'I increased my share in bitcoins last week because I know what’s coming... I just wanted to acquire more bitcoins to prepare for what this asset will bring in the future.' His belief in bitcoin as the future of money also led him to publish a book titled 'Bitcoin Enlightenment.'
Significant bitcoin inflows from prominent figures often attract attention and can lead to volatility in the cryptocurrency market. Although past investments from figures like Michael Saylor and Elon Musk have contributed to increased interest in the market, there is currently no evidence that Pliego’s recent actions carry similar large-scale institutional or regulatory consequences.
Bitcoin remains the main cryptocurrency affected by this investment. There are no signs that Pliego is investing in Ethereum or other altcoins. Furthermore, this decision appears to be a personal investment choice rather than a corporate directive.
The lack of direct technological or political consequences suggests that Pliego's decision is primarily of interest to private investors and small communities.
