∞/21 million

Commemorative dates show the culture behind Bitcoin

The community is celebrating this Thursday (21) the Bitcoin Infinity Day. The term is linked to the date 8/21 (21/8 for us Brazilians), a joke that expresses the scarcity of Bitcoin and its potential for appreciation.

This is because when the number 8 is rotated, it represents the infinity symbol (∞), indicating that everything that exists in the world is divided by the maximum supply of 21 million bitcoins.

On the other hand, the joke is also a critique of fiat currencies, whose supply grows year after year and, despite technological leaps that increase production and productivity, their purchasing power only decreases.

The joke started in 2021 and has been gaining strength

The term 'Bitcoin Infinity Day' was introduced by Knut Svanholm in August 2021, four years ago. On that date, the author suggested that people should not sell their bitcoins on this day.

"Ok, here is the first idea for #BitcoinInfinityDay on August 21
(∞/21M)."

"On August 21, you either buy or #HODL. Selling #bitcoin for any reason on this day is not allowed," commented the Swede in 2021. "If we can get enough people to do this, the price is almost guaranteed to rise on that day!"

Despite the commemorative date, few investors seem concerned with this 'rule'. This is because Bitcoin is operating around $112,500 this Thursday (21), down 1.5% in the last 24 hours.

Among the celebrities who joined the joke is Michael Saylor, founder of Strategy.

"Imagine, everything that exists and everything that will ever exist, divided by 21 million."

In Saylor's tweet, there is a 'honey badger', an animal adopted by the community as the Bitcoin mascot, another point that shows the formation of a culture around the largest cryptocurrency in the market.

What other dates do Bitcoin investors celebrate?

In addition to the recent Bitcoin Infinity Day, investors have been celebrating other dates for some time.

The most remembered day is January 3, the date when the first Bitcoin block was mined by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009, marking the beginning of the entire story.

On December 9, the 'Bitcoin Whitepaper Day' is celebrated, published in 2008.

Another famous day is May 22, known as 'Bitcoin Pizza Day', in honor of the guy who bought two pizzas for 10,000 bitcoins (now valued at R$ 6.2 billion).
