SoFi Technologies will integrate Bitcoin Lightning payments for cross-border transfers, becoming the first U.S. bank to do so. The service launches later this year, starting with remittances to Mexico.
The system converts USD to BTC in real time, routes via the Lightning Network, then settles into local bank accounts. SoFi targets the $740.5 billion global remittance market with fees below the national average.
The integration uses Lightspark’s Universal Money Address system, founded by former PayPal president David Marcus. The 24/7 service provides full fee transparency. SoFi’s launch makes it the first operational bank deployment of Lightning-powered payments.
