Chen Meihui (Miffy), the chief blockchain financial crime investigator at XREX, unfortunately died in a car accident on a highway section in Hsinchu last December. Due to her long-term assistance to the police in investigating money laundering and fraud cases, there was speculation that the accident had 'other circumstances.' After investigation, the Hsinchu District Prosecutor's Office confirmed that this case was a 'purely traffic accident.' Recently, the Hsinchu District Court ruled that the driver Xu was sentenced to 2 years and 4 months in prison for 'negligent homicide.'
Chen Meihui is one of Taiwan's leading blockchain investigation experts, who has long assisted the police in investigating money laundering and fraud cases, successfully tracking illegal financial flows and freezing illicit assets. The cases she was involved in during her lifetime include the sensational '88 Club Money Laundering Case,' the tracking of illegal financial flows in 'Creative Private Rooms,' and the money laundering methods of 'Money Laundering Godfather' Tu Chengwen.
Before the accident, Chen Meihui was under investigation for being involved in a 'leak case' at the Taichung District Prosecutor's Office. She later took an Uber ride back north with her boyfriend, surnamed Xie, who works in the Criminal Investigation Bureau. When they were traveling on National Highway No. 1, 77.7 kilometers northbound, traffic had already been congested due to an accident, forcing their Uber to stop in the inner lane.
Unexpectedly, less than an hour later, a 40-year-old driver surnamed Xu, who was engaged in airport transfers, drove his SUV at high speed. Due to the curve obstructing his line of sight and failing to slow down, he directly crashed into the Uber in front. The strong impact caused the rear of the car to crumple, resulting in Chen Meihui suffering from fractures in her chest and thigh, as well as abdominal bleeding. She was sent to the hospital but did not survive; the vehicle also crashed into 4 cars ahead, causing injuries to 3 other people.
Investigations found that Xu's vehicle's engine and brake system were both functioning normally. However, at the moment of the accident, Xu did not apply the brakes, and the brake lights did not illuminate. The EyeSight assist system could also operate normally but was in the off state.
ETC traffic records also confirm that the driver Xu's average speed before the accident was about 106 to 108 kilometers per hour, while the speed limit for that section of the road was 100 kilometers per hour. The judge determined that Xu was speeding both before and at the time of the accident.
The judge pointed out that Xu, as a professional taxi driver, should have maintained a high level of vigilance at all times. However, he failed to slow down as warned, resulting in a tragic incident with 1 dead and 3 injured. Xu has not reconciled with the family of Chen Meihui or reached any reconciliation or compensation with the other 3 injured parties. Nevertheless, he has admitted his crime from the beginning and has no prior record. Ultimately, he was sentenced to 2 years and 4 months in prison for negligent homicide, and the case is still subject to appeal.
