🇯🇵☄️ A GREAT FIREBALL LIGHTS UP THE JAPANESE SKIES: "IT WAS AS BRIGHT AS THE MOON"

On August 19, 2025, at 11:08 PM local time, a spectacular meteor crossed the southern sky of Japan, turning night into day for a few seconds. U.S. government sensors recorded an impact energy of 1.6 kilotons of TNT as it disintegrated over the Pacific.

Surveillance cameras and dashcams captured the exact moment: first green-blue flashes that saturated the sensors, followed by a final orange-red explosion before fragmenting. It was clearly seen from Kagoshima and Kumamoto, and even from Osaka airport 200 km away.

"People reported feeling the air vibrate. It was as bright as the moon," confirmed Toshihisa Maeda, director of the Sendai Space Museum. Data indicates that the meteor disintegrated over the Pacific Ocean southeast of Kyushu, at coordinates 30.9°N and 131.8°E.

For perspective: the Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013 released 440 kilotons, making this event 275 times smaller but still notable. Fireballs of this scale occur globally a few times a year and rarely pose danger at ground level.

🔭 It is a natural event, likely a sporadic meteor not associated with any known meteor shower. Japan, with its extensive network of security cameras, frequently captures these phenomena, becoming one of the best places in the world to document meteors.
