Currently (2025), when we talk about the top 10 major blockchains in the Web3 ecosystem, we mean networks that hold the largest share in terms of: market capitalization, on-chain activity, transaction volume, and adoption of decentralized applications (dApps).
Here’s the list:
1. Ethereum (ETH) → The giant of smart contracts, and the largest DeFi and NFT platform.
2. Bitcoin (BTC) → The first digital asset, used as a store of value and has seen DeFi solutions emerging around it via Layer2.
3. BNB Chain (BNB) → A robust network for applications and DeFi with low fees.
4. Solana (SOL) → Very fast, strong in NFT markets and high-performance applications.
5. Avalanche (AVAX) → Known for its fast settlement and support for enterprise applications.
6. Polygon (MATIC / POL) → An expansion solution for Ethereum, strong in institutional partnerships.
7. Aptos (APT) → A modern blockchain built on the Move language, focusing on speed and user experience.
8. Sui (SUI) → Similar to Aptos, but with a greater focus on scalability and the smoothness of the Web3 experience.
9. Arbitrum (ARB) → One of the leading Layer2 networks on Ethereum, strong in DeFi.
10. Optimism (OP) → Layer2 on Ethereum, expanding rapidly with strong technical support and an active community.
⚡ Note: There are other rising chains like Base (from Coinbase) and Linea (from ConsenSys) and zkSync which are also gaining significant momentum, but the ten above are considered "core" currently.
