Trump: Russia's acceptance of Ukraine's security guarantees is an 'important step'
On August 18, 2025, at the White House in Washington D.C., U.S. President Trump met with Ukrainian President Zelensky, German Chancellor Merz, French President Macron, and Italian Prime Minister Meloni to negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Trump stated that Putin agreed for Russia to 'accept security guarantees for Ukraine', which is 'a very important step'.
Trump also mentioned that security guarantees would be a topic of discussion at the multilateral talks.
Trump said, 'I am optimistic that we can reach an agreement together to prevent any future attacks on Ukraine.'
Zelensky also stated that they would 'discuss security guarantees more extensively'.
