BitVM (Bitcoin Virtual Machine): This is the key to Bitlayer’s security. BitVM is an "off-chain workspace" that allows for complex computations to be performed and then verified on the Bitcoin network. It uses a fraud-proof system, similar to how Optimistic rollups work on Ethereum. If a user on the Bitlayer network believes a fraudulent transaction has occurred, they can challenge it. When you send your BTC to the bridge, it is locked on the Bitcoin mainnet. An equivalent token, called YBTC, is then minted on the Bitlayer network. This YBTC is fully backed by your locked BTC and can be used in the Bitlayer DeFi ecosystem. The bridge is trust-minimized, meaning it doesn't rely on a single custodian.
