Ethereum Investor Turns $75,000 into $1.1 Billion, but It's Unreachable The story of an Ethereum investor has captured the attention of the crypto world: he turned $75,000 into $1.1 billion in a decade, but cannot access his fortune. The case, involving Rain Lõhmus, an Estonian banker, has become a reminder of the risks of lacking digital security.
In 2015, Lõhmus participated in the initial coin offering (ICO) of Ethereum, acquiring 250,000 ETH. Ten years later, his investment reached astronomical value. However, the loss of access to his wallet left him out of what could be one of the largest personal gains in the crypto ecosystem.
How Did Rain Lõhmus Lose a Fortune in Ethereum? According to on-chain data shared by Arkham, the founder of LHV Bank also received his 250,000 ETH on July 30, 2015. At that time, access to wallets usually depended on password-protected files (JSON keystore) and 12 or 24-word seed phrases were not the current standard. Hardware wallets were also not popular.
Lõhmus himself acknowledged in 2023 that he has not made significant efforts to recover access, claiming that losing passwords happens to him frequently. His case is reminiscent of James Howells, who lost thousands of Bitcoin (BTC) by discarding a hard drive #MarketTurbulence #HotJulyPPI #REVABinanceTGE #DeFiGetsGraded #CPIWatch
