#DonaldTrump U.S. President Donald Trump gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a personal letter from First Lady Melania Trump during their meeting on August 15 at a U.S. military base in Anchorage, Alaska, according to two White House officials quoted by Reuters.

The letter talked about the situation of many Ukrainian children who were taken to Russia or areas controlled by Russia after the 2022 invasion. The officials didn’t share the full letter, but said it asked for the children to be sent back and mentioned possible human rights violations.

Ukraine says these mass transfers are a war crime and could be considered genocide under United Nations rules. Russia says it is protecting the children. The U.N. Human Rights Office has accused Russia of causing serious harm to Ukrainian children.

Trump and Putin spoke for almost three hours, but didn’t agree on a cease-fire to end the war. Melania Trump was not at the meeting.
