Solana Q2 2025 Update: Alpenglow Consensus Upgrade
Solana has unveiled the Alpenglow consensus upgrade, a transformative overhaul designed to drastically reduce transaction finality times from around 12 seconds to approximately 100–150 milliseconds. This upgrade replaces the original Proof-of-History and Tower BFT mechanisms with two new components called Votor (a high-speed voting protocol) and Rotor (an optimized data propagation system). Alpenglow aims to bring Solana’s transaction speed and efficiency closer to Web2 performance levels, supporting next-generation decentralized finance, gaming, and real-time applications.

Application Revenue Capture Ratio surged by 211.6%
Real-World Asset (RWA) value grew 24% QoQ to $391 million
Alpenglow is expected to simplify validator operations, lower participation costs, and enhance network security and scalability, positioning Solana as a leading platform for high-frequency, low-latency blockchain use cases. The upgrade is set for mainnet rollout likely in late 2025 or early 2026, pending community governance approval.
