🇨🇳🇮🇳 Border trade: China and India move closer

After a five-year pause, Beijing and New Delhi are discussing resuming border trade in local goods — from spices and carpets to medicinal plants and electronics. Trade posts were closed in 2020 amid the pandemic and armed clashes in the Himalayas.

🤔 Why it matters:

⚫ Talks include reopening three former trade points along the 3,488 km border

⚫ Before the freeze in 2017–18, trade turnover reached $3.16m

⚫ The restart is part of gradual normalization: both sides are also preparing direct flights and lifting fertilizer supply restrictions

⚫ In August, Modi will visit China for the SCO summit for the first time in seven years

💬 “Border trade between China and India has long played an important role in improving the lives of residents on both sides of the border,” said China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Amid cooling ties between India and the U.S. and 50% tariffs on exports to the States, the Asian neighbors are cautiously looking for points of economic contact.
