Bitlayer: A Bitcoin Layer-2 Built on BitVM
Bitlayer is a Bitcoin Layer-2 (L2) that brings smart-contract programmability and high throughput to Bitcoin—while aiming to keep Bitcoin-level security. It’s built around the BitVM paradigm and integrates a native BitVM Bridge for moving BTC trustlessly between L1 and L2. Bitlayer is EVM-compatible, so developers can deploy familiar Solidity apps and tooling.
What makes Bitlayer different?
Security-equivalence goal: Bitlayer’s rollup design posts state claims to Bitcoin and uses a recursive verification protocol to settle L2 state transitions on Bitcoin L1—moving beyond simple inscriptions.
BitVM Bridge: A trust-minimized bridge designed to bring native BTC liquidity into DeFi on Bitlayer.
EVM compatibility: Forked from geth for a familiar developer experience (RPCs, tooling, wallets).
How it works (at a glance)
1. Batching: Transactions on Bitlayer are bundled into batches on L2.
2. State claim on Bitcoin: Operators submit a state claim to Bitcoin L1 that commits to the new L2 state after processing that batch.
3. Verification/Dispute: Using BitVM-style interactive verification, incorrect claims can be challenged, anchoring L2 security to Bitcoin’s proof-of-work.
Why builders and users care
Cheaper, faster transactions than L1 Bitcoin, with finality tied back to Bitcoin
