Jeff Bezos’s space venture, Blue Origin, is now accepting Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, USDt, and USDC for its New Shepard suborbital flights, thanks to a partnership with Shift4 Payments.
The company, which has flown over 75 passengers beyond the Kármán Line, will process direct crypto payments via wallets like MetaMask and Coinbase. Shift4 CEO Taylor Lauber called the move a step toward “revolutionizing commerce beyond Earth,” while crypto lead Alex Wilson predicted growing use of digital assets for luxury purchases.
Blockchain’s Reach Beyond Earth
In 2022, NFT project Azuki sent its “Bobu the Bean Farmer” character to space aboard a SpaceX/NASA mission. In 2020, SpaceChain executed the first multisignature Bitcoin transaction from the International Space Station.
Last December, Spacecoin XYZ launched a satellite to begin building an orbital blockchain network, aiming to anchor decentralized applications in space.
Stratospheric and Ground-Level Innovations
World Mobile, in partnership with Indonesia’s Protelindo, is deploying hydrogen-powered drones at 60,000 feet to beam 5G connectivity, integrating with its DePIN network to deliver low-latency, low-cost internet.
Crypto and Blue Origin’s Past
Blue Origin’s crypto connection predates this announcement. On Aug. 3, Tron founder Justin Sun flew on the NS-34 mission after paying $28 million for his seat in 2021, with the funds donated to 19 space-focused charities. Upon return, Sun remarked, “Earth is so small, and it’s our home. We must protect it.”

제프 베조스가 설립한 우주 탐사 기업 블루 오리진(Blue Origin)이 비트코인, 이더리움, 솔라나, USDt, USDC 등 암호화폐와 스테이블코인으로 우주여행 티켓 결제를 지원한다. 이번 결제 옵션은 결제 솔루션 기업 시프트4 페이먼츠(Shift4 Payments)와의 파트너십을 통해 도입됐다.
블루 오리진은 현재까지 75명 이상의 승객을 카르만 라인(지구 대기권과 우주의 경계)을 넘어 태운 경험이 있으며, 메타마스크(MetaMask)와 코인베이스(Coinbase) 등 지갑을 통한 직접 결제를 지원한다.
시프트4의 CEO 테일러 로버는 “지구를 넘어 상거래 혁신을 확장하게 되어 기쁘다”고 밝혔다. 시프트4의 암호화폐 책임자인 알렉스 윌슨은 “암호화폐와 스테이블코인은 고가 상품 결제 수단으로 점점 더 인기를 끌 것”이라고 말했다.
블록체인의 우주 확장
블록체인 기술은 이미 문화적·기술적 형태로 우주에 진출했다.
2022년에는 NFT 프로젝트 아즈키(Azuki)가 ‘보부 더 빈 파머(Bobu the Bean Farmer)’ 캐릭터를 스페이스X·NASA 미션에 실어 우주로 보냈으며, 2020년에는 스페이스체인(SpaceChain)이 국제우주정거장에서 첫 멀티시그 비트코인 거래를 완료했다.
2024년 12월에는 스페이스코인 XYZ가 궤도 블록체인 네트워크 개발을 위해 첫 위성을 발사했다. 해당 프로젝트는 미래 탈중앙 경제를 지원할 우주 기반 블록체인 시스템을 구축할 계획이다.
지상·성층권에서도 확산
텔레콤 스타트업 월드 모바일(World Mobile)은 인도네시아 프로텔린도(Protelindo)와 함께 6만 피트 상공에서 수소 드론을 이용해 5G 네트워크를 제공하는 프로젝트를 추진 중이다. 이 네트워크는 기존 통신 인프라와 탈중앙 물리 인프라 네트워크(DePIN)를 결합해 저비용·저지연(6ms) 연결을 제공한다.
블루 오리진과 블록체인의 인연
블루 오리진과 블록체인의 연결고리는 이번이 처음이 아니다. 2021년 트론(Tron) 창립자 저스틴 선은 2,800만 달러에 NS-34 미션 좌석을 낙찰받아 2024년 8월 3일 비행에 참여했다. 해당 금액은 19개 우주 관련 자선단체에 기부됐다.
저스틴 선은 귀환 후 “지구는 작고 우리의 집이다. 우리는 반드시 이를 보호해야 한다”고 말했다.
