Beware of the desire for riches: Do not forget God, the source of all.
In a society where success is often measured by money and possessions, the human heart is easily seduced by the desire to be rich. However, the Bible warns time and again about the danger of placing our trust in riches instead of in God.
1. God is the one who gives riches
Scripture is clear: 'You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth' (Deuteronomy 8:18). This means that prosperity does not solely depend on human effort, but on the will and blessing of God. If He is the source, it would be foolish to seek money before seeking Him. Jesus summarized it this way: 'But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you' (Matthew 6:33).
2. The risk of forgetting God
The danger is not only in having riches, but in them taking the place of God in our hearts. Jesus warned: 'You cannot serve God and riches' (Matthew 6:24). When possessions become our god, our faith grows cold and gratitude disappears.
3. Not everyone will be rich, and that is for our own good
The Bible teaches that the love of money is the root of all evils (1 Timothy 6:10). God, who knows our hearts, knows that in some, material abundance could awaken pride, greed, or even lead us away from faith. Therefore, sometimes His love is manifested in not giving us everything we desire, but rather what we truly need to save our soul.
4. The true treasure
Jesus advised: 'Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth... but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven' (Matthew 6:19-20). Earthly riches are temporary; spiritual riches are eternal. What truly enriches us is faith, communion with God, and good works.
Conclusion
Riches are not bad in themselves, but the desire to obtain them and the trust in them are. God wants us to seek Him first, to acknowledge that everything comes from Him, and to understand that true prosperity lies in having an upright heart and secure salvation. In the end, it is better to be poor with God than rich without Him.
