tEthereum, launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and others, is a blockchain platform enabling smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps). Unlike Bitcoin, which focuses mainly on digital currency, Ethereum allows programmable transactions via its native token, Ether (ETH). Its initial release, “Frontier,” was followed by network upgrades like Homestead, Byzantium, and Constantinople. In 2016, a major hack led to the DAO hard fork, splitting Ethereum into ETH and Ethereum Classic (ETC). Ethereum’s popularity fueled the ICO boom of 2017. In 2022, “The Merge” transitioned it from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, greatly reducing energy use and paving the way for future scalability improvements.
