As a result of a brutal attack in central Paris, a man lost a hard drive containing bitcoins worth 2 million euros.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, August 5, was yet another in a series of cryptocurrency-related crimes in France.
According to local media reports, the incident began around 7:15 PM at the Peninsula hotel, a luxury hotel located on Kleber Avenue in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. Hotel staff reported to the police after seeing five unknown men approach one of the guests and demand, 'Give us 400,000 euros, and it will all be over.' The victim was then forcibly taken from the hotel to the area near the Arc de Triomphe, where he was subjected to physical violence.
Crime-fighting officers reacted quickly and arrested all five suspects in the 8th arrondissement. Initial investigations indicated that the group might be connected to a nearby nightclub where the victim allegedly owed 40,000 euros. The police believe that the suspects attempted to forcibly collect this debt.
The victim was briefly interrogated by authorities and stated that he was beaten and threatened. He reported that the attackers took his iPhone 13 Pro Max and a hard drive containing bitcoins worth about 2 million euros. He added that a similar incident occurred last week, during which the same individuals displayed weapons.
The suspects were detained at the First District Police Department on charges of extortion. The case was taken over by investigators from the anti-gang brigade overnight. The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed that five individuals are in custody and that investigations and hearings are ongoing.
Paris is not new to being in the spotlight due to cryptocurrency-related crimes. The country has seen a series of violent kidnappings targeting individuals from the industry. The latest case occurred in May and involved a failed attempt by a masked gang to kidnap relatives of the co-founder of the French bitcoin exchange Paynium. Twenty-five suspects were subsequently charged with the attempted kidnapping.
In another case, the father of a crypto millionaire was kidnapped while walking his dog. David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, and his wife were also abducted from their home in France in January. French special forces rescued the couple after a 58-hour hostage situation. The operation led to numerous arrests, including individuals previously convicted of cryptocurrency-related crimes. In both cases, ransom was demanded, and the victims were released with missing fingers.
