In crypto, three words get thrown around a lot: Coin, Token, and NFT.They’re not the same, and if you’re serious about crypto, you should know exactly how they differ.
👉1. Coin – The Native Currency
A coin is a cryptocurrency that runs on its own blockchain. Examples: Bitcoin (BTC) on the Bitcoin blockchain, Ethereum (ETH) on the Ethereum blockchain, BNB on the BNB Chain. Main use: Sending, receiving, and storing value (like digital money). Why it matters: Coins are the backbone of their networks. Without BTC, there’s no Bitcoin network. Without ETH, Ethereum stops working. Tip: If it has its own blockchain, it’s a coin.
👉2. Token – The Guest Currency
A token doesn’t have its own blockchain. It’s built on top of an existing one. Examples: USDT (Tether) on Ethereum or BNB Chain, Chainlink (LINK) on Ethereum, ApeCoin (APE) on Ethereum. Main use: Can be for payments, governance voting, gaming, DeFi, or representing real-world assets. Why it matters: Tokens depend on the blockchain they’re built on. If that chain has problems, the token is affected. Tip: If it’s living on another blockchain, it’s a token.
👉3. NFT – The One-of-a-Kind Asset
NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. It’s still a token, but it’s unique. Examples: Bored Ape Yacht Club art, in-game skins, music NFTs, virtual land. Main use: Proving ownership of a unique digital item. Why it matters: You can swap one BTC for another BTC and they’re identical. NFTs are different — each one is unique, like a signed collectible. Tip: If it’s unique and can’t be replaced 1:1, it’s an NFT.
👉Why You Should Care
Investment: Knowing the difference helps you avoid buying the wrong thing. Security: Many scams rely on people not knowing these terms. Opportunities: DeFi, gaming, art, and metaverse all work differently for coins, tokens, and NFTs.
👉Bottom line:
Coins → Native to their blockchain.
Tokens → Built on another blockchain.
NFTs → Unique digital items with proof of ownership.
The clearer you are on these basics, the stronger your crypto decisions will be.
