Diana Mondino, the former Foreign Minister of Argentina, made a public appearance on August 8. She gave an interview with Mehdi Hasan of Al Jazeera. Mondino left President Javier Milei's government in October 2024. She had been less visible until this interview.
Mondino mentioned that Milei is promoting a cryptocurrency called 'Libra'. Milei confirmed this token through his official X account on February 14. After his post, the token's price surged. Then, the price suddenly dropped sharply. Milei later deleted the post. He confirmed that he wrote the post but said he did not have enough knowledge about the project.
Reports Indicate Potential Underlying Irregularities
Three wallets hold most of the tokens. The project's website was registered on the promotion day. These patterns indicate the potential for a 'rug pull' scam. Developers sometimes abandon projects after artificially inflating the value.
Hasan asked Mondino if Milei acted correctly. She replied, 'No. He shouldn't tweet like that.' When asked about Milei's motives, she suggested someone advised him. Hasan noted a profit of $250 million for unidentified parties. Mondino offered two possibilities: 'Either he is not very smart, or he is corrupt. You choose. I don't know.' Hasan repeated this statement. Later, Mondino softened her tone in the tense exchange.
Mondino also quoted criticism from economist Carlos Rodríguez. Rodríguez had previously advised Milei but now opposes him. Rodríguez implied that Milei might have mental instability. Mondino declined to deny these accusations. She said, 'I have worked with both... I must say that Carlos Rodríguez is always right.'
