India has suspended plans to acquire American military equipment worth billions of dollars, marking the first real sign of diplomatic consequences after President Donald Trump imposed high tariffs on exports this week, leading to a deterioration in bilateral relations to their lowest level in decades.

According to some Indian officials familiar with the situation, New Delhi has delayed finalizing deals for the supply of Stryker combat vehicles, Javelin anti-tank missiles, and Boeing P-8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft. The tariffs, raised on August 6 from 25% to 50%, were imposed as a punishment for New Delhi's ongoing import of Russian oil.
This move represents a significant setback in the strengthening defense relations between the two countries, which have long been viewed as a counterbalance to China's influence in Asia.

Tariffs are causing a lull in diplomatic relations.
On August 6, Trump announced a 25 percentage point tariff increase, claiming that India's discounted purchases of Russian oil are funding Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The new tariff, one of the highest for any U.S. trading partner, was imposed in addition to the existing 25% tariff and resulted from a series of disputes that tested U.S.-Indian relations.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh was supposed to visit Washington in the coming weeks to present new procurement agreements, including a $3.6 billion deal for the supply of six Boeing P-8I aircraft for the Indian Navy. According to sources, the trip was quietly canceled.
However, the Indian government quickly refuted reports of a suspension of supplies, calling them 'false and fabricated' in a statement released late Friday. The statement also mentioned that purchases are continuing according to existing procedures. Partnership under pressure.
Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi previously promised to deepen defense ties by redirecting India's procurement from Russia to Western suppliers. This Asian country is the second largest arms importer in the world and has increasingly turned to the U.S., France, and Israel in recent years.

However, the tariff increases have exposed fault lines. Indian officials criticized Washington for attacking New Delhi while continuing to trade with Moscow when it serves U.S. and European interests.

This dispute came on top of existing tensions, including Modi's refusal to acknowledge Trump's mediation in achieving a ceasefire with Pakistan following a brief escalation that led to four days of fighting between the two countries in May.

India is balancing between Moscow and Washington.
Despite the current chill, officials say that defense relations with the U.S. continue without interruption. Intelligence sharing and joint training programs remain in place, and New Delhi is not ruling out reducing Russian oil purchases if it can find competitive alternatives, including from American suppliers.

Moscow, for its part, is courting India by offering new military technologies such as S-500 missile systems.

Although Indian officials report no immediate demand for new orders of Russian weapons, they acknowledge that years of dependence on Moscow mean that the armed forces will require Russian support for existing systems for many years to come.
