The Cardano team developed an alternative solution to the 251-byte payload signing issue.
Charles Hoskinson celebrated strong participation in the Midnight Glacier Drop distribution program, where 11,000 coins were redeemed, resulting in 250 million NIGHT tokens since its launch.
The founder of Cardano expressed surprise at user engagement across eight supported blockchain platforms, including Cardano and XRPL.
Participation numbers indicate that at least 11,000 unique addresses successfully received their token allocations during the first phase of the Midnight distribution program.
Users shared positive experiences on social media, with many confirming smooth claims for their NIGHT token distributions.
Ledger wallet users are facing technical difficulties
Eligible Cardano community members using Ledger hardware wallets are still facing difficulties receiving their NIGHT tokens due to technical constraints.
The Midnight Foundation team and Hoskinson identified the main reason for Ledger's application of message signing protocols CIP-8.
The current Ledger firmware supports message signing of only 31 bytes, while Glacier Drop requires approximately 251 bytes to process the payload. This significant difference causes compatibility issues that prevent Ledger users from completing their token receipt requests.
Hoskinson confirmed that the Cardano team reached out to Ledger last month to request firmware updates to meet the requirements of the larger payload.
The hardware wallet manufacturer has not announced a timeline for implementing the necessary changes to support the Midnight claims process.
The Cardano team is developing an alternative solution
The Cardano development team is developing an alternative solution that enables eligible users with Ledger wallets to receive their nightly allocations. Hoskinson described this fix as a "breakthrough" that will surpass the limitations of current firmware while maintaining security standards.
Affected users are advised to return at the end of August to attempt to receive their tokens using the updated system. This timeline allows the development team to implement and test the alternative claims mechanism before deployment.
The Glacier Drop system remains active for two months, ending on October 4 at 13:00 UTC, allowing enough time to fix Ledger compatibility. Users who successfully receive the tokens will receive them gradually over a 12-month recovery period with unlocking schedules in batches.
Phase two, called the "Treasure Mine," will begin immediately after Glacier Drop ends and will last for 30 days. This phase distributes NIGHT tokens as rewards to users who complete computational tasks within the Midnight system.
Phase three, called 'Lost and Found,' allows eligible participants in Glacier Drop to claim reduced allocations after Midnight launches on the mainnet. This final claims window remains open for over four years, with unclaimed tokens eventually allocated to the Midnight treasury.
