CHINA WARNS OF BIOMETRIC DATA RISKS TIED TO CRYPTO PROJECTS

China’s Ministry of State Security has raised alarms over foreign firms allegedly collecting sensitive biometric data—like iris scans—under the guise of crypto distribution. While no names were mentioned, the described methods closely mirror those used by Worldcoin, co-founded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman.

Officials claim such tactics threaten both personal privacy and national security, citing examples of fingerprint-based platforms and facial data misuse by foreign intelligence services. In one highlighted case, a firm reportedly gathered global iris data while distributing crypto tokens—a move sparking serious concerns.

Despite Worldcoin’s assurances of encrypted, anonymized data handling, countries like Kenya, Germany, France, and the UK have questioned the project’s security and ethics. Kenya even halted new signups in 2023 amid growing scrutiny.

China now urges its citizens to be cautious when submitting biometric data to tech firms, calling for transparency, strict privacy controls, and user vigilance.
