According to a report by Decrypt, Ledger hardware wallets have software limitations that prevent some Cardano users from participating in the Midnight Foundation's two-month 'Glacier Drop' event, which distributes NIGHT tokens across eight blockchain ecosystems.

The reason is that Ledger's implementation of the CIP-8 protocol limits messages to 31 bytes, while the airdrop message is 251 bytes, and the current firmware cannot support this. Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson stated that this is a Cardano-specific issue within Ledger's software, which was reported back in July, but Ledger has not provided an update. Fahmi Syed, Chairman of the Midnight Foundation, confirmed this, stating that they are in communication with Ledger, and that XRP and Avalanche also have similar situations, with a solution expected in the coming weeks.

Although Ledger has not yet released a fix, Cardano developers are rolling out a workaround. According to Hoskinson, the system will use empty transactions containing the 'Glacier Drop' payload as metadata instead of traditional message signatures. This workaround will be integrated into the 'Glacier Drop' protocol so that affected users can claim their tokens.
