Tensions between Trump and Russia have entered a new phase. This time, Moscow is firmly pushing back against the U.S. president’s threats to India over its continued trade in discounted Russian oil. The Kremlin labeled Trump’s efforts to undermine Russian-Indian relations as “pathetic” and made it clear that the White House won’t dictate global partnerships.

💬 “New Delhi has every right to trade with whomever it chooses,” said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday, responding to Trump’s televised statement that he may significantly raise tariffs on Indian exports within 24 hours. The president repeatedly criticized India for buying Russian oil and reselling it at a profit on global markets.

“They’re not a fair trading partner. If they keep doing this, I won’t be happy,” Trump said on CNBC’s Squawk Box.

India Pushes Back – Deepening Ties with Russia

India isn’t backing down – quite the opposite. Top officials including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar are heading to Moscow to strengthen strategic ties. The Times of India was first to report the travel plans.

India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also dismissed U.S. criticism as “unwarranted” and pointed out that even Western nations continue to trade with Russia – albeit more quietly.

“It’s revealing that those criticizing India still do business with Russia, even though it’s not essential for their national interests,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Trade Numbers Speak for Themselves

Russia-India trade has surged since the start of the war. In 2021, Russian oil made up just 2.5% of India’s total imports. Today, it accounts for 39%, or more than 1.8 million barrels per day.

Putin and Modi also remain in close personal contact – the Indian PM visited Moscow last year, and Putin’s return visit to India is expected later this year.

Kremlin and Delhi Stand United Amid Trump’s Pressure

Washington’s pressure campaign is intensifying. Trump is threatening both tariffs and sanctions if the Moscow–Delhi oil corridor continues to grow. But the Kremlin is showing firm support for India.

“This is an illegitimate attempt to score geopolitical points through economic blackmail,” said Peskov. “Countries like India have the sovereign right to choose their partners.”

Given these strong statements and quick diplomatic moves, it’s clear that Russia and India’s alliance is here to stay, despite geopolitical friction. And Trump? He’s still waiting for a reaction – one that may never come.
