U.S. President Donald Trump intends to sign a decree providing for sanctions against banks that refuse to serve cryptocurrency companies, conservative and religious organizations. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing sources in the administration.
According to the draft document, financial regulators must investigate possible violations of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, antitrust laws, and consumer protection rules. Banks found guilty of discriminating against clients based on political or other grounds face fines and other penalties.
The decree is aimed at practices that critics call 'Operation Chokepoint 2.0' — an alleged campaign to exclude crypto companies and inconvenient clients from the banking system during Joe Biden's presidency.
The project also cites specific cases, including the closure of accounts of a Christian organization in Uganda by Bank of America and banks' cooperation with authorities in the investigation of the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
