Trump is bringing Brazil even closer to China, says Marcos Caramuru
The former Brazilian ambassador to China, Marcos Caramuru, who is now a strategic advisor at the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI), evaluates that the tariff policy of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, is pushing Brazil towards an even closer economic relationship with China.
In an interview with the Chinese website Guancha, published this Monday (4/8), the retired diplomat criticized the tariff increases imposed by Washington and commented on the geopolitical impact of the tightening Sino-Brazilian relations.
Trump announced that, starting August 1st, imported goods from Brazil will be subjected to tariffs of 50%. In addition, he publicly pressured for investigations against former President Jair Bolsonaro to be closed, an action that Caramuru classified as an explicit attempt at political interference.
“The United States will not back down from the tariffs, and this will cause us to export less to them. This is a mistake that will only push Brazil further in the direction of China,” he said.
