Tether, the issuer of the stablecoin $USDT , has become one of the largest investors in U.S. government debt. As of early July 2025, the volume of its investments in treasury bonds exceeded $127 billion, placing it seventh among buyers of U.S. government debt. This surpassed holders such as Germany, Canada, and Mexico. Tether uses these bonds to back its USDT reserves, which guarantee its liquidity. Since the beginning of the year, the supply of USDT has risen to $167 billion, reflecting increased demand.
CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized that the record financial result of 2025 — a net quarterly profit of $4.9 billion and a total half-year revenue of $5.7 billion — coincided with an increase in investments in government bonds. Additionally, Tether invested over $13 billion in fintech, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and mining. Experts are divided: some see this as a strategic move, while others view it as a risk to market stability. The rise of U.S. public debt to $36.6 trillion only intensifies the discussion.
