UK to recognise Palestinian state unless Israel meets conditions

UK after France

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the UK will recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel takes real action to improve the crisis in Gaza. He wants Israel to agree to a ceasefire, let aid into Gaza, stop taking more land in the West Bank, and support a two-state solution.

This decision comes as pressure grows from other countries and many UK MPs. France also said it would recognise Palestine in September.

Israel’s leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, strongly disagreed, saying it would reward terrorism. Starmer also said Hamas must release hostages, stop fighting, and accept they cannot govern Gaza. Some people support the UK’s plan and say it could help peace.

Others believe making recognition depend on Israel’s actions is wrong. Over half of Labour MPs want immediate recognition. The US and Germany still think a Palestinian state should only be recognised as part of a peace deal. So far, 139 countries already recognise Palestine.
