The US SEC and Ripple both withdrew their appeals from the court on 7th August, ending the yearlong court battle over classification of the $XRP token. Ripple's Chief Legal Officer Stuart Alderoty added "The End ... and now back to business." to his X post. It started in late 2020, the SEC sued Ripple in a Federal Court, accusing it of selling an unregistered security. In July 2023, a federal judge delivered a mixed ruling, finding some tokens could be considered securities, a decision the agency had appealed. Now, as the appeals process was abandoned, the decision made in 2023 will be final. Judge Torres ruled token sold on public exchange did not meet the definition of a security, but the tokens Ripple sold to institutional investors were sold as unregistered securities and ordered to pay 125 millions dollars in fines to SEC, far lower than the agency's $2 billion request. As the President Trump promised to end regulatory enforcement of crypto in his second term, the SEC has abandoned multiple lawsuits against crypto firms. The SEC and Ripple came to a settlement in May 2025 and asked the judge to dissolve the injunction, but she denied, saying that Ripple still required to follow securities law anyway. Coin Gecko Data shows XRP price rally since the push to settlement, rising 99% in recent months from 2025 bottom (1.79$) in April to peak 3.56$ on July 22. The price fell back to 3$ but risen again in past days. Though Ripple has emerged victorious from battle with the SEC, the case ended in settlement and did not advance to a higher court, so it has not established a binding precedent.
