Sanna Marin, born in 1985 in Helsinki, Finland, came from a modest background and was raised in a “rainbow family” by her mother and her mother’s female partner. Despite financial challenges, she remained focused on education and worked various jobs to support herself.
She studied Administrative Sciences at the University of Tampere and began her political career through the Social Democratic Party. Rising from local politics, she became a Member of Parliament in 2015.
In 2019, at just 34 years old, Sanna Marin made history by becoming the youngest Prime Minister in Finland’s history—and one of the youngest world leaders. Her government was especially notable for being led by a coalition of women party leaders, setting a global example for gender equality.
During her time in office, she gained international praise for her calm and transparent leadership, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. Her simplicity, empathy, and focus on progressive policies earned global respect.
