Hackers have become active again: according to researchers from c/side, over 3500 websites around the world are infected with scripts for hidden mining of the cryptocurrency Monero. This campaign exploits vulnerabilities from old attacks aimed at unpatched servers and e-commerce platforms to install malicious software, including XMRig. The miner runs stealthily, using the computing power of website visitors, making it difficult to detect.

Monero is popular among cybercriminals due to its high anonymity of transactions, making tracking difficult. Malefactors have earned millions using similar schemes, such as the Crackonosh botnet, which infected 222 thousand devices and brought in $1.8 million. This wave of cryptojacking demonstrates the evolution of tactics: from loud attacks to quiet but effective operations.

Victims often do not notice the load on their devices, as the websites appear innocent. Experts recommend updating software, using antivirus programs, and avoiding pirated content to protect against such attacks.
