DuckDuckGo, a popular search engine focused on privacy, has introduced a new feature – a filter to hide images generated by artificial intelligence (AI). As of July 2025, the internet is flooded with so-called "AI slop" – low-quality content generated by AI, making it difficult to find genuine images. The new filter allows users to exclude such images from search results, giving them control over the content.
The feature is activated through the "Images" tab from the dropdown menu "AI images: show/hide" or in the search settings, where users can enable the option "Hide AI-Generated Images". A special domain noai.duckduckgo.com is also available, where the filter is automatically enabled, and AI functions are turned off. The filter is based on manually curated open blocklists, such as uBlockOrigin and uBlacklist Huge AI Blocklist, and significantly reduces the number of AI images, although it does not completely exclude them.
This step reflects DuckDuckGo's philosophy: "privacy, usefulness, optionality". The company plans to add new filters to enhance the user experience. The feature is particularly relevant in light of criticism towards Google for excessive use of AI content, such as the case with images of peacock chicks.
