Trump Told Netanyahu To "Rectify" Situation After Syria Attack: White House

US President Donald Trump was caught off guard by Israel's strikes on Syria and called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address the situation. Israel recently targeted Syria's capital, Damascus, and the southern city of Sweida, near the presidential palace and Syria’s defense ministry.

Israel's goal was to pressure Syria's government to withdraw troops from the region amid ongoing clashes. Trump was also surprised by the bombing of a Catholic church in Gaza. In both cases, the President swiftly reached out to Netanyahu to discuss the incidents.

The White House emphasized that Trump has a close relationship with Netanyahu, staying in frequent communication. Trump had met Netanyahu earlier this month, marking the Israeli PM’s third visit since Trump’s return to office in January.

Trump was also involved in de-escalation efforts in Syria, with Israel and Syria entering a US-brokered ceasefire. Additionally, Netanyahu expressed regret to Pope Leo for the Gaza church bombing, attributing it to a "stray missile."

This comes amid shifting US-Syria relations, as Trump previously met Syrian President Al-Sharaa and lifted sanctions against Syria, signaling a change in policy.
