The Deepest Lake in the World
Lake Baikal, when viewed from space, resembles an unfinished open blue eye with a length of 636 kilometers and a widest point reaching 80 kilometers.
One-fifth of all freshwater on Earth is located in this lake.
This means that there is more water in Lake Baikal than in the total water of the five lakes known as the "Great Lakes" in North America.
The depth of Lake Baikal is over 1600 meters. If the lake were to suddenly dry up one day, it would take a year to fill it with water flowing from all the rivers in the world.
Some people find it somewhat frightening to cross Lake Baikal by boat, as the crystal-clear bright waters allow visibility to the bottom at a depth of 50 meters, creating a sensation of being in an abyss.
A community of small shelled creatures called "Epischura" plays a filtering role in the lake, filtering out algae and bacteria that cloud many other lakes.
Numerous species of freshwater crayfish that consume organic waste without allowing it to decompose also assist them.
The water is so clean that a water sample taken for laboratory testing less than twenty years ago had contaminated the glass it was stored in!$BTC
