Tension erupted when Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian exports starting August 1. The reason: to defend his ally Bolsonaro, who is facing trial for attempted coup after losing the 2022 elections.
Lula struck back hard: “Brazil is a sovereign nation with independent institutions and will not accept any form of tutelage.” He called Trump’s announcement “unacceptable blackmail” and promised to apply Brazil’s Economic Reciprocity Law if Trump follows through on his threat.
The fact that destroys Trump’s argument: The United States has a TRADE SURPLUS with Brazil of $7.4 billion. In 2024, the U.S. exported $49.7 billion to Brazil and imported only $42.3 billion. Trump lied about the “unsustainable deficit.”
Trump's letter arrived during the BRICS summit in Rio, where Lula was hosting leaders from China, Russia, and India. The timing was no coincidence: Trump threatened an additional 10% on “anti-American” BRICS countries and is using tariffs as a political weapon to interfere in internal judicial processes.
💣 “We did not expect a diplomatic response, we expected respect,” said Lula. The Brazilian finance minister confirmed they are already preparing retaliation measures. Lula's approval rating rose after the confrontation. Brazil does not bend.
