In 2017, with Bitcoin already known and Ethereum gaining traction, the altcoin frenzy began.
Hundreds of new projects appeared with promises of being 'the new Bitcoin' or 'Ethereum but better'.
Some were legitimate. But many others were not.
It was the rise of ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings), where anyone could launch a crypto and receive millions... often without meeting any requirements.
That year, Bitcoin surpassed $20,000 USD for the first time. And the first major drops also occurred.
