A journalistic investigation conducted by The Rage revealed that the amount of Bitcoin held by the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) is only 28,988.35643016 $BTC , which is equivalent to approximately $3.4 billion. This figure is significantly lower than previous estimates that attributed about 200,000 BTC to the U.S. government. A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request submitted in March 2025 confirmed this data on July 16. However, analysts, particularly Arkham Intelligence, suggest that the total amount of confiscated Bitcoins in the U.S. could be closer to 198,000 BTC (~$23 billion), as the USMS only holds a portion of the assets.
This information has sparked discussions in the cryptocurrency market, as the sale of even a small portion of confiscated Bitcoins could impact the price. For example, in 2023, transferring 10,000 BTC to Coinbase caused a 2% price drop. The investigation highlights that the U.S. government is likely avoiding massive sales to prevent destabilizing the market. Further FOIA requests are expected to clarify whether sales of confiscated assets have taken place.
