WHEN JUSTIN SUN ATE THE BANANA OF CATTELAN
In November 2024, Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun caused a scandal by eating the banana from "Comedian," the artwork by Maurizio Cattelan consisting of a banana taped to a wall: a week earlier, he had purchased it for over 6 million dollars.
Sun, who peeled and ate Cattelan's banana under the media flashes in Hong Kong, shared the interview on X during a press conference specially convened for the event. "It's really very good," declared the entrepreneur in front of the cameras while eating the fruit.
The entrepreneur had bought the artwork "Comedian" for 6.2 million dollars from Sotheby's in New York, outbidding other cryptocurrency collectors. "Eating it during a press conference can also become part of the history of the artwork," explained Sun, turning the act into a true artistic happening.
PS. The act did not destroy the artwork: since the banana inevitably rots, the artistic value lies in the concept and the certificate of authenticity, not in the fruit itself.
