Ethereum Announces zkEVM Layer-1: Ambition to Lead the Zero-Knowledge Era

The Ethereum Foundation has recently revealed a major plan: integrating zkEVM Layer-1, transforming #Ethereum into the leading blockchain for applying zero-knowledge proofs (ZK) right from the base layer.

According to engineer Sophia Gold, validators will soon have the option to run zk clients, allowing them to verify blocks using 3 independent zk proofs instead of re-running all transactions. In the initial phase, a group of pioneering validators will experiment, followed by an expansion through audits, bug bounty programs, and gradually transitioning to zk proof as the default.

The goal: to increase the gas limit, integrate native zk-rollups, scale while ensuring security and decentralization. Ethereum also sets a “real-time proving” standard: proof in ≤ 10 seconds for 99% of blocks, minimum security of 128-bit, proof size ≤ 300 KiB, and hardware under $100,000 – encouraging home validators to participate.

Sophia Gold calls this the “real-time proving race,” aiming to finalize the standard #zkVM before Devconnect Argentina in November.

This is just the first step in Vitalik Buterin's “zk-friendly” ambition: from zkEVM Layer-1, Ethereum will aggregate signatures at the consensus layer, secure on-chain data, streamline protocols, and upgrade overall security, moving towards One Trillion Security.

This information comes as the crypto market is booming: Bitcoin surpasses $118,500, while Ethereum has re-established the $3,000 mark after 6 months.

Investing in cryptocurrency carries high risks due to significant price volatility.
