🇬🇹⚠️ EARTHQUAKES LEAVE AT LEAST 7 DEAD AND MORE THAN 100 HOMES DAMAGED IN GUATEMALA
Guatemala was shaken by more than 150 earthquakes and aftershocks in the last 48 hours, with magnitudes between 3.0 and 5.7. The strongest struck near the capital with an epicenter in San Vicente Pacaya. The tremors were felt as far away as El Salvador, causing mass evacuations.
💔 Confirmed victims: 4 people died in Santa María de Jesús when 50% of the town was destroyed. A father and his son were crushed by rocks in Palín. A woman was buried by a landslide in Villa Nueva along with her dog. A 13-year-old boy was rescued lifeless in Sacatepéquez.
The destruction is devastating: more than 88 houses affected, 52 severely damaged or destroyed. A historic church in Santa María de Jesús collapsed. In Guatemala City, a building completely collapsed. Nine health centers, 3 schools, and 14 stretches of road became unusable.
🚨 President Bernardo Arévalo declared an orange alert and suspended classes and work in 3 departments. Thousands of families slept in the streets for fear of aftershocks that do not cease. "You can't be inside there," said a resident whose house was damaged from the foundations.
📊 Guatemala records 693 earthquakes of magnitude 3+ per year, but this series is exceptional. The country is located over the convergence of the Cocos and North American plates, one of the most seismically active areas in the world. Experts warn that more strong aftershocks could come.
