Digital currencies are providing women in Afghanistan with the tools to confront an oppressive regime.
This is according to the founder of the Digital Citizen Fund (DCF), Roya Mahboob, who spoke in an interview on the sidelines of the Bitcoin Policy Summit.
The tech entrepreneur and human rights advocate said that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency assets offered her sisters suffering under the Taliban's restrictive regime the hope of improving their lives.
Ms. Mahboob added that her organization provided Afghan women with financial and digital education through online and underground channels. A significant part of that training is about the ownership and use of BTC. She said that Afghanistan's restrictive setup made the leading cryptocurrency a survival tool, which is why they teach them to transact with it.
